The union of two souls is not only a celebration of love but also a showcase of the distinctive customs that have been passed down through generations. In this blog, we explore 10 traditions that make a Bengali wedding truly amazing.

  1. Aiburo Bhaat: In Bengali, “aiburo” means unmarried person and “bhaat” means rice. A special feast is arranged for the bride and the groom in their respective houses as it is the last meal that they eat as a bachelor. Numerous delicious food items are prepared by the family members

  2. Gaye Holud : It is a ritual that takes place at the bride and groom’s house separately, on the morning of the wedding ceremony. Dating back to the Vedic ages, this ritual is said to be performed to protect the bride and groom from the evil eye or misfortunes.

  3. Tatta : The bride’s family and the groom’s family send numerous gifts to each other as a token of appreciation as the two families embark on a new journey together. These gifts are known as Totto. These gifts include a variety of items, from clothes and accessories to food and sweets. 5. Subho Drishti : The moment when the bride and groom see each other for the first time at the wedding is known as Shubho Drishti. The bride comes to the wedding mandap while covering her eyes with betel leaves, while being carried on a wooden seat held by the male members of her family. She is then made to encircle her husband 7 times, all whilst covering her eyes and being carried by her family members. After this, the bride removes the betel leaves from her eyes and sees her would-be husband.

  6. Saat Paak : It is one of the most important ritual of a Hindu Bengali wedding. The bride and the groom encircle the fire 7 times and make vows to each other. Each round they make around the fire represents 1 particular vow. The priest recites the vows as they encircle the holy fire.

  7. Sindoor Daan: During the wedding ceremony, the groom applies sindoor (vermillion powder) on the bride's forehead, symbolizing her marital status. It is a sacred ritual that marks the beginning of their journey as husband and wife.

  8. Kanakanjali : Before the bride leaves for her in-laws’ house, she performs one last ritual. She takes some grains of rice and throws it behind her back, without looking back. This custom is to honour everything that our mothers do for us to bring us up as proper human beings.

  9. Bou Bhaat : Bou Bhaat takes place one day after the wedding. This tradition marks the first time the new bride cooks food at her in-laws’ place. She cooks rice or any sweet dessert dish for everyone in her new family.

  10. Bashi Biye (Shoe Stealing): This takes place on the day after the wedding, before the bride goes to her husband’s house. A lot of different wedding games are played, which vary according to local customs.

Bengali weddings are a treasure trove of vibrant traditions that make the celebration truly amazing. From the colorful Gaye Holud to the sacred Sindoor Daan and the playful Bashi Biye, each tradition adds its own unique charm to the festivities. These customs not only bind families together.
